Robin Uthappa names future India captain

Speaking about the same, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has thrown his weight behind young opener Shubman Gill as a future captain for Team India. Uthappa’s comments come after Gill’s impressive performance leading the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

In a recent chat, Uthappa lauded Gill, calling him “a gift for Indian cricket” and highlighting his qualities as a leader. He pointed to Gill’s maturity and his experience captaining the Titans as indicators of his readiness for a larger role.

“Yeah, I think he’s a gift for Indian cricket. I think he’s some who’s maturing into an all-time great within the Indian cricket fraternity. And I think, we’ve seen him thrive, and we’re seeing him grow into a very prolific leader who is going to lead not just his IPL side, but I also think the Indian team in the near future,” said Uthappa on JioCinema.

Performance in IPL 2024

Notably, this isn’t the first time Gill’s leadership potential has been recognized. Suresh Raina, another former Indian star, also recently endorsed Gill as a future captain. Gill’s consistent batting performances across formats, coupled with his emerging leadership qualities in the ongoing season of IPL, have certainly made him a strong contender.

Currently, he holds the top position in terms of runs scored for Gujarat and ranks fourth overall among the leading run-getters in IPL 2024. Across 8 matches, the right-handed batter has accumulated 298 runs, with an unbeaten 89 being his highest score. He has secured two half-centuries and appears poised to continue excelling, both in his batting prowess and leadership role.
