Pam Shriver: Current Iga Swiatek level reminds of most dominant Serena Williams play

on

Pam Shriver says Iga Swiatek’s recent form reminds her of the most dominant play by Serena Williams and some other all-time greats.

Last week, Swiatek won Doha with a total of five games lost in three matches played – that was a new record for the lowest number of games dropped en route to winning a title.

After winning Doha, Swiatek kicked off her Dubai campaign by demolishing 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez 6-1 6-1.

In her next Dubai match, Swiatek destroyed Liudmila Samsonova 6-1 6-0.

“Wow Iga’s level is next level atm hardly dropping games vs tough opponents. It’s reminiscent of the most dominant play by Navratilova, Graf, Seles and Serena,” Shriver tweeted.

In her pre-tournament press conference in Dubai, Swiatek received a very direct question and she responded with a very candid answer.

“They’re saying you could be the next dominant player in women’s tennis. Do you think you can live up to that title?” Swiatek was asked in Dubai.

Swiatek responded: “I think last season was already pretty dominant, so yeah.”

Swiatek made a slow start to her 2023 season as she wasn’t looking like her usual self in Australia.

After failing to live up to the expectations in Australia, Swiatek needed a restart and it worked for her.

“It was the beginning of the season. My pre-season was pretty intense on the court and also off the court. I still feel like I did a really good job in United Cup. Before the travel day, I was playing really, really solid matches. In the Australian Open as well, I played against Elena [Rybakina], and she totally deserved to win. She went to the final later. For sure, she was in good shape.” Swiatek said in Dubai this week.

Meanwhile, Swiatek is competing in Dubai for the third time in her career.

This week, Swiatek is bidding to win her first Dubai title.
