Nintendo Isn’t Attending Gamescom 2024 Event

on

Nintendo, one of the greatest tech titans in gaming, has confirmed it won’t be attending the Gamescom 2024 showcase. As one of the biggest and brightest gaming events in the world, Gamescom welcomes publishers, developers, and all manner of industry organisations from around the planet. It’s fast becoming a total replacement for E3, which was confirmed last year to have died a shocking death. However, Nintendo recently confirmed that it’s stepping back from Gamescom this year and won’t be in attendance.

This means that the Nintendo Switch 2 – the rumoured next-generation Nintendo console – won’t be shown during the event. Following something of an update on the Nintendo Switch 2 a few weeks ago, it was suggested that the console won’t be released until 2025, with Nintendo having had to push back the launch of the highly anticipated console. In the statement that confirmed the withdrawal, Nintendo didn’t address the new (rumoured) console.

No Nintendo

Gamescom is a stellar event that draws monumental crowds from all around the world. It’s where new games are announced, hardware is put to the test, and developers flex their latest and greatest products. Everyone who is everyone finds their way to Gamescom, and it’s a networking event and showcase like no other. It can be argued that it is currently the biggest gaming event of its kind in the entire world.

In August, Gamescom 2024 will kick off, but Nintendo won’t be there, per a recent update:

‘Gamescom is a great event, and each year we evaluate whether Nintendo should participate or not. After careful consideration from all perspectives, we’ve made the decision not to be present at Gamescom 2024. Players will have opportunities to try out Nintendo Switch games at other events throughout the year.’

There’s no nod to the impending release of the Nintendo Switch 2 – or whatever it’ll be called – which is probably a tactful decision on Nintendo’s part. In the meantime, there will be plenty of other gaming giants at Gamescom for players, fans, and industry workers to rub shoulders with. Typically, you’ll see the likes of PlayStation, Xbox, Bethesda, Activision, Electronic Arts, Riot Games, and more of the big, bold firms taking up space at the event.

I soak up every event in the United Kingdom, such as the Insomnia Gaming Festival, WASD, and EGX, but this’ll be my first year attending Gamescom. There are high expectations for this event, especially given last year’s confirmation that E3 is now officially dead and buried.
