Nick Kyrgios’ manager Daniel Horsfall called Pat Cash “out of touch” as he is wondering what the Australian tennis legend gains from constantly criticizing Kyrgios.
After Tennis Australia announced Kyrgios would take on Novak Djokovic in an exhibition match on Rod Laver Arena, Cash was stunned to see something like that being organized on a Grand Slam’s Centre Court just days before the start of the tournament.
On Friday, Kyrgios defeated Djokovic.
Rod Laver Arena was sold out as Tennis Australia charged tickets at a price of $20.
The proceedings were donated to charity.
“Cash is clearly out of touch. I honestly can’t remember the last time he said anything positive or supportive of Nick and Tennis Australia. Tennis Australia did a fantastic job. That practice match was going ahead either way. It could have been on a back court for all they cared. RLA gets used all day a week out from the Australian Open. I don’t know why he thinks it’s different for NK or Novak. As far as I am concerned, we are only here because of the fans. Not only did TA manage to let fans see two superstars, they donated all proceeds to charity. Anyone who has an issue with that really isn’t a fan of the game in my opinion,” Horsfall told The Herald and The Age.
What Cash exactly said of the Kyrgios-Djokovic exhibition match
“In what country, in what grand slam would you have Wimbledon suddenly pulling out centre court or court 1 because Andy Murray needed a practice match. It’s hard to believe. They certainly wouldn’t do it at the French Open. They’ve [Tennis Australia] bent over backwards to help Nick to get some matches and to do this, I don’t know,” Cash told SEN’s Sportsday.
After Kyrgios defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in a tense Wimbledon match, Cash also criticized Kyrgios and his behavior during the match.
Meanwhile, Kyrgios has withdrawn from the Australian Open.
After withdrawing from the United Cup and Adelaide 2, Kyrgios wanted to use the Djokovic exhibition as a test for his condition.
On Monday, Kyrgios pulled out of the Australian Open due to a knee injury.
