NFL Draft rumors: Will the Giants take the quarterback plunge?

on

Analysts are split on both whether they will, and whether they should

With the 2024 NFL Draft only a few days away, let’s catch up on some of the rumors and speculation that might involve the New York Giants.

Ex-GM: Giants won’t take a QB

Former Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman says point-blank that the Giants “won’t address the quarterback need in the first round this year.”

Spielman says quarterback at No. 6 “makes no sense” for the Giants because they can get “a significant player” who can help them win games in 2024. Also because of the money already committed to Daniel Jones.

Schefter: ‘Could be Drake Maye’

NFL insider Adam Schefter said recently that as much as the Giants need a top-tier wide receiver, if Drake Maye slides to No. 6 the Giants might not be able to let him pass.

“It’s hard to imagine that they would bypass one of the top wide receivers in this draft in favor of a quarterback unless the right guy happened to slide right to them … I think that could be Drake Maye.”

Patriots staying at No. 3?

Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team believes it would take “a godsend offer” for the New England Patriots to move down from No. 3. If the Patriots stay at No. 3, the most likely scenario seems to be they would have their choice of Maye or J.J. McCarthy.

Schefter believes the Patriots will take a quarterback, even if they manipulate the board before taking one.

Albert Breer of SI recently wrote that he “certainly could see” the Giants moving up to No. 3 for Maye.

Warner not in on J.J. McCarthy

Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner isn’t a fan of a team selecting McCarthy in the top five.

“I like the technique by which he plays,” Warner said. “Obviously, you like the fact that he won a lot of football games, but if I’m drafting someone in the top five, I want to know that I can trust him to win games with his right arm. We never had to see that.

“We never saw the pressure on him to have to make throw after throw after throw week after week to carry his football team,” Warner added. “You will have to do that in the National Football League with the way the league is built with the talent at the quarterback position. So that is a huge question for me because we’ve never seen it”

Do Vikings have a deal in place?

Art Stapleton recently wrote on ‘X’ that he has “Been hearing rumblings that the Vikings likely have parameters of a deal in place if their QB is on the clock, whether that’s at 3, 4 or 5.”

That is entirely possible because these deals don’t come together in the few minutes a team is on the clock without preparation beforehand. If they don’t already, Schoen and the Giants will know by Thursday where they might be able to move up to, and the cost. They will also know their options for moving down, and the scenarios where that might come into play.

Yes — and no — on McCarthy

When former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum said on ‘First Take’ that if he was the Giants he would move up to No. 4 to select McCarthy, Dominique Foxworth wasn’t having it. Those of you who are not Tannenbaum fans will enjoy Foxworth’s brutal takedown of Tannenbaum.

“Mike I think misunderstands the proper way to develop a quarterback,” Foxworth said. “It’s not his fault, I think a lot of people who are watching the draft don’t understand that you have to have the situation right before you go get the quarterback.

“The situation matters much more than the player.”
