Murray warns Djokovic: “He is impressive, but age is against him”

In an interview with TheAge, the British champion Andy Murray talked about many of his colleagues and what they are getting out of their careers. The Scotsman focused above all on the ambitions of ATO No.1 Novak Djokovic and the young players of the Next Generation.

The 3-time Slam champion and former ATP No.1 declared that as long as the Serbian champion is present on the ATP Tour, it will be difficult for the younger ones to beat him, but everything depends on his form.

“Djokovic is still impressive, but with age it becomes more and more difficult. Young people are making great strides by winning in big prestigious tournaments, which gives them confidence, but I know that when the Australian Open comes around it won’t be easy for these guys win against Novak in an important match,” said Murray.

The Briton then continued his discussion on the challenges between the Serbian and the new talents of world tennis. “The ATP Finals and the Davis Cup are big events, and I’m sure for Sinner or some of the younger guys it increases their belief when they go on tour against them. Some are trying to win a Major for the first time. It’s not easy when you’re trying to win the first and you’re playing against someone who has won 24 times and 10 times here. It’s a very different mentality,” explained the Scot.

2024 is off to a bad start for Andy

It hasn’t been a happy start to the season for Murray in 2024. After his premature elimination from the ATP 500 in Brisbane in the first round against future champion Grigor Dimitrov, the British tennis player was unable to beat Marin Cilic in the exhibition match at the Kooyong Classics.

The 35-year-old Croatian got the better of the three-time Slam champion with a score of 6-3 7-5, returning to success after almost a year. Still without a win in the new year, the 36-year-old Briton nevertheless said he was satisfied with these first outings.
