Moxley’s NJPW title reign continues, Nemeth’s ends at Wrestling Dontaku

The second night of New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s Wrestling Dontaku event is in the books after more action at Fukuoka Convention Center on Sat., May 4.

In the main event, Jon Moxley successfully defended his IWGP World Heavyweight championship against Ren Narita. To do so, he had to overcome the interference that comes from wrestling anyone in Narita’s House of Torture stable. But the AEW star got assists from El Desperado and his NJPW protege Shota Umino en route to pinning Narita after hitting him twice with his Death Rider finisher.

Umino, who escaped from handcuffs HoT put him in before the match to save Mox from EVIL and Dick Togo to set-up the finish, will now get to face his mentor for the belt at Resurgence in Ontario, California next Saturday (May 11).

One match earlier, Nic Nemeth and David Finlay fought for the IWGP Global championship in an impromptu match set-up on the first night of Wrestling Dontaku. Accepting an unplanned challenge for the belt 24 hours after he beat the legendary Hiroshi Tanahashi provided a measure of protection for the former Dolph Ziggler, who dropped the title back to Finlay in a match that didn’t feature interference from Finlay’s Bullet Club War Dogs squad. Saturday’s encounter did start with a brawl on the ramp, reminding us that Finlay jumped Nemeth after Friday’s main event. It ended with a pair of powerbombs, and the Bullet Club leader’s Overkill finisher.

Elsewhere on today’s card, Shingo Takagi successfully defended the NEVER Openweight championship against Gabe Kidd while KENTA & Chase Owens ended the IWGP Heavyweight title reign of Bishamon to win those belts for a second time.
