Liverpool could soon take action to secure the services of Mikel Merino (Real Sociedad), this winter transfer window. The English club would make him their new priority to strengthen their midfield.
According to information gathered by journalist Rudy Galetti, Liverpool are taking a close interest in Mikel Merino’s situation at Real Sociedad. Jürgen Klopp would very much appreciate his profile and would give him his preference over those of Moises Caicedo (Brighton) and Sofyan Amranat (Hellas Verona).
Mikel Merino already enjoys a fine reputation in Spain. Aged 26, the native of Pamplona has scored 2 goals and provided 7 assists this season. He already knows the Premier League, as he wore the colors of Newcastle in 2017-2018, before being transferred to Sociedad for a sum of 12 million euros. Since then, the midfielder has made 175 appearances, 18 goals and 23 assists in all competitions. He also has 11 selections with La Roja, where places are particularly expensive in the midfield. Imanol Alguacil, his coach, thinks he is the best player in Spain.
A price higher than 50 M€?
Liverpool will however have to put the means to recruit him. Transfermarkt values his transfer at 50 million euros. However, it is unlikely that the Basque club will validate the idea of a mid-season departure so easily, especially since his contract runs until 2025. Jürgen Klopp could still ask his leaders to make a big effort, while he is faced with problems to compose his midfield.
Note that the Reds would still make Jude Bellingham their priority for next summer. The English club would therefore not have given up the race, although the Spanish media imagine a signing of the player from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid. The transfer of the English international should be negotiated at another level, an amount of 150 million euros being regularly mentioned by the German press.
