Aldo vs. Martinez took place May 4 at the Farmisa Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Former UFC champion Jose Aldo (32-8) faced off against Jonathan Martinez (19-5) in the night’s much-anticipated co-main event. The fight aired live on ESPN+ pay-per-view.

Round 1: “Uh Vai Morrer!” Chants start before the fight begins. Aldo in orthodox, Martinez in southpaw. Aldo with high guard, Martinez pawing the jab early as Aldo walks him down.

Martinez goes for a low kick and Aldo responds with a 3 piece. Aldo checks a kick. Martinez’s lead hand is touching constantly. Aldo to the body with a straight. Checks two kicks. He’s the best at that.

Patience from both men. Aldo combos but Martinez is out of range. He is walking Martinez down. Martinez reaches for a single. Aldo with a high kick. Martinez tries one and slips. Aldo lets him up and lands a right hand. He’s backing Martinez up and lands a low kick. Then checks one.

Aldo starting to get the timing down. Combo from Aldo misses. He’s pawing Martinez’s lead hand down now. And rips a nasty right hand to the body. Best punch of the fight thus far.

Combo from Aldo glances. Body kick from Martinez gets through. Aldo keeps walking him down and another combo. Martinez is either all defense or all offense. No blending. Ooof. Aldo lands a nasty right hand up top. He’s getting the fight he wants. Slowing the pace, letting his defense do the work.

Nice combo from Aldo that finishes with a body hook. Martinez is freezing a bit. And he’s biting on feints now. Aldo cracks him again. Then a low kick. Martinez trying to walk forward now. But Aldo pushes back. And a low kick. Lot of hand fighting with the leads. Aldo expertly keeps him out of range as the round ends.

Round 2: Martinez’s corner tells him that he’s respecting Aldo too much. That’s true. But keep doing that. No one wants you to win.

Martinez taking the center to start and again the lead hands battle. Aldo lands an inside low kick. Martinez goes high with a kick but misses. Aldo lands a left to the body. Martinez lands a low kick. Aldo responds with a 3 piece that gets Martinez backing up.

Nice right hook to the body from Aldo! And now Martinez shoots in for a takedown. DC calls that an exercise in futility which is true. If Merab couldn’t do it, you think you’re going to?

Martinez does have a clinch against the fence though. Bit of a stall here. Some stomps, knees. Full delay here and Beltran calls for action. But he’s not breaking them. This is boring. Nothing is happening. Martinez is holding the wrist and just staying here and there’s the break. halfway point.

Aldo lands a right. Aldo with a nice pair of hooks to the body! Martinez fires back and tags Aldo! Aldo stands 10 toes down and rips back! Martinez backing up! Martinez fires back. Aldo feeling himself and tags again. A fight is breaking out. the crowd chants “Al-do!”

Martinez eats a right but lands a left. Aldo lands another. His boxing is looking sharp right now. He’s out on angles. Aldo lands again. Mean right hook to the body for Aldo as he covers up on a feint. Oh! Martinez barely misses a spinning back fist. Martinez now pressing forward and Aldo backing up, circling.

Martinez is biting on every feint. It’s a bad look. And Aldo lands but Martinex gets one back. Good combination from Martinez but Aldo answers right back. He’s not letting Martinez get any momentum.

Round 3: Martinez needs a finish. He started to build something there but Aldo is so savvy. He knows how to manage things.

Snappy left for Martinez right at the start. He comes in and Aldo fires a big combo back to get him covering up. Another. Martinez upping his output some and he’s taking the center.

And then Aldo ducks under for a takedown. He doesn’t commit though and Martinez shucks it off. Martinez back on the gas. Aldo jabbing and moving. He’ not there to be hit so far.

Martinez lands a 1-2. Aldo lands a right. Aldo biting a little more now. But lands a mean 1-2. Then a nasty knee as Martinez covers up! And a left. He rips with intent when the window is there. Martinez keeps that pressure up though.

Good right from Aldo. Martinez staying in the booth now. Martinez lands a right, but Aldo lands one as well. Left from Martinez. They’re staying in close and boxing now. Aldo’s a little better on the defense here though.

Martinez lands the jab. Aldo a right through the guard. Martinez with a good body kick. Aldo with a left. OH!

BIG LEFT FROM ALDO HURT MARTINEZ!!!!!

He’s in trouble! Aldo with a big knee. He’s attacking! Martinez is in trouble! Big combo and Aldo dumps Martinez to the floor! 90 seconds left and Aldo is in top position. Martinez has the guard and this might save him because he was in a WORLD of trouble on the feet.

But Aldo chipping in shots here. 60 seconds from a win for Aldo. Martinez tries to scramble and Aldo passes! He’s moving to mount! Martinez defends and reguards. Martinez wanted an arm-triangle. But this fight is over.

Aldo on top and finishing the round here. Martinez firing shots from the bottom but it’s futile. Jose Aldo remains the King of Rio.
