“Put the ball in my hands, it’s over for ‘em.”

The Cincinnati Bengals got some great news Monday when the team saw franchise quarterback Joe Burrow return to team workouts. It was the first we’ve seen Burrow throw since his injury last October.

A healthy Burrow is obviously a key to the Bengals’ success, but recent numbers shed a little more light on just how important Burrow is. To make it simple, you want the ball in Burrow’s hands with the game on the line.

(It is important to note that the below tweet was edited in the thread to reflect these numbers are since 2024, not 2000).

Of all quarterbacks, Burrow is the best in the NFL when trailing in the last five minutes of the game. This is based on EPA per dropback with a minimum of 45 dropbacks in a scenario where a team is losing with less than five minutes left in the game. If you are not familiar, EPA is Expected Points Added. EPA is an advanced statistic in football. EPA measures how well a team performs compared to their expectation on a play-by-play basis.

Burrow has lead game-winning drives in the biggest of moments since entering the league in 2020 and per Sharp’s numbers, nobody in football is as good as Burrow at getting their team into position to win the game.

Here’s to seeing Burrow on the field for the entirety of the 2024 season and feeling confident with the ball is in his hands with the game on the line.
