Jelena Ostapenko was again unhappy with the electronic line calling at the Australian Open as she claimed that it “multiple times failed to react on an evident out.”
Ostapenko, ranked at No 17 in the world, suffered a 6-2 6-4 defeat to Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open quarterfinal.
Throughout the tournament, Ostapenko was expressing her displeasure over the electronic line calling system at Melbourne Park.
“I’m not really happy with the system they are using. But couple times it was really, like, not even by couple of centimetres. It was much more than that. But I cannot do anything about it, because it is the way as it is. But I feel like some lines, sometimes the system is not, how you say, not ignoring, but sometimes the calls are — first of all, they are really late sometimes. You already hit the ball, and then you hear ‘Out,’ which is normally not the way it is with the line umpires. And second of all, some balls were quite, how you say, not a little out. They were a bit out and they were not called,” Ostapenko said, per Tennis Up To Date.
Ostapenko fell short of reaching her first Major semifinal since 2018
In the Australian Open round-of-16, Ostapenko delivered a big performance to upset seventh-seeded Cori Gauff.
With that win, Ostapenko made her first Grand Slam quarterfinal since 2018 Wimbledon – she made the semifinal at The Championships that year.
But after beating Gauff, Ostapenko failed to beat Rybakina and also reach her first Grand Slam semifinal in five years.
Ostapenko, 25, became a Grand Slam champion very early in her career.
At the 2017 French Open, Ostapenko lifted her first Grand Slam title.
Six years have passed since Ostapenko became a Grand Slam champion and since then she has had only one Grand Slam semifinal appearance.
It remains to be seen how will Ostapenko do in the remaining three Grand Slams this year.
