On Sunday, sixth-seeded Medvedev recovered from a set down to beat Sinner 5-7 6-2 6-2 and win his first title of the season in Rotterdam.

Sinner, who won Montpellier the week before, took a moment to congratulate Medvedev after falling short of winning back-to-back titles.

“Daniil, congrats to you and your team, winning your first title of this season. I think you’re going to win many more this year, so I wish you all the best. It has been two positive weeks for me. I played many matches and I’m very proud,” Sinner said after the final, per the ATP website.

How Medvedev defeated Sinner?

Down by a break, Medvedev refused to quit and he broke back the Italian in the seventh game.

In the 12th game – when Medvedev was serving to stay in the first set – Sinner broke the Russian to win the opener.

After losing the first set on a devastating way, Medvedev broke Sinner in the very first game of the second set.

Medvedev then earned his second break of the set in the fifth game, before serving out for the second set in the eighth game.

After winning the second set, Medvedev broke Sinner in the third game of the third set and also saved a break point in the fourth game to open a 3-1 lead.

In the seventh game, Medvedev broke Sinner for the second time in the third set to take a 5-2 lead.

Up by a double break, Medvedev routinely served out for the title in the eighth game.

Meanwhile, Sinner is now set to play in Marseille, where he is the second-seeded player.

In Marseille, Sinner has a first-round bye and will start his tournament from the round-of-16.

It remains to be seen if Sinner can also make a deep run in Marseille.
