Jacksonville Jaguars TE Evan Engram

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to place the franchise tag on tight end Evan Engram, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The tight end franchise tag locks Engram in at $11.345 million for the 2023 season. Additional reporting from NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe notes that the tag is not solidified yet. Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke will use the tag if the team cannot work out a long-term deal. Regardless, the Jaguars will not allow Engram to hit the open market.

Engram signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022 after five seasons with the New York Giants. He posted new career highs with 73 receptions, 766 receiving yards. Not only are his 91 receiving DYAR and 7.3% receiving DVOA both new highs as well, but it is also just the second time in his career Engram has finished positive in either category.

Engram ranked top-ten in DYAR among tight ends for the first time in his career. This represents a complete reversal from Engram’s 2021 season, where his -81 DYAR was dead-last among 55 qualifying tight ends. Since 2000, no other tight end has finished last in DYAR, then finished top-ten in DYAR the following season.

Serious question. When was the last first round pick at tight end that went on to become a consistent star? I guess Kyle Pitts. And of course there is Tony Gonzalez. But otherwise, its been a pretty poor track record to say the least. Tight end might be the one position that seems completely divorced from draft pedigree.
