How much patience do the Broncos have?

The 2024 NFL Draft could be a test of patience for a frustrated franchise.

When Ian and I finished recording Broncos Odds and Endzones this week, I had a thought. I have no idea what the Denver Broncos are going to do in this year’s NFL Draft. Seriously, anything could happen.

When Ian and I discussed things, I leaned heavily on Peter Schrager’s mock draft. He puts a lot of effort into it, and people I trust trust him. Still, who really knows?

I would bet that even Payton and the Broncos have no idea what they are going to do. Obviously, the big need is QB. It has been for years. That doesn’t guarantee anything.

As a fan, I have always claimed to be more of an in-season guy. Offseason stuff is fun, but I like to lean on experts. From what I can tell, the experts think the Broncos are going to draft a QB, or an edge rusher, or trade back, or trade up, or send all the picks to Arizona to get whichever top QB is available.

It’s enough to make a guy dizzy.

The issue is more about patience. How patient is Payton? How patient is Greg Penner? If the draft board doesn’t fall the way the Broncos want, will they panic, or force the issue? Can they spend another season losing without the QB position settled in hopes of drafting a top prospect in 2025?

Payton is competitive. Penner wants to win. The Walton-Penner group purchased a franchise that used to be a crown jewel in the NFL. Are they willing to spend a season waiting?

I don’t have the answer, but I will say this. If Payton believes his guy is in this draft, they need to go all in to get him. Trade everything to get it done.
