Set on the doorstep of the Kruger National Park, Leopard Creek Country Club offers perhaps the most exclusive round of golf in South Africa.

The brainchild of Johan Rupert, the stunning bushveld golf course is a fixture on the DP World Tour for the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

In their own words, “Leopard Creek has grown out of the vision of a banker and skills and expertise of one of the world’s great golfers. It is founded on the values of friendship, a common love of the game of golf and a shared reverence for nature.

“Innovative architectural and landscaping techniques ensure that the Leopard Creek golf course and living areas are naturally protected from animals, while lakes and small streams have been diverted through the development to create scenic vistas and interesting golf strategies.

“Golfing hazards take on a new dimension at Leopard Creek, for much of the water is home to the magnificent creatures for which the river is named, crocodiles. Extensive use has been made of water features and sightings of crocodile, hippo, antelope, buffalo and elephant are commonplace, on the course or in the Kruger Park bordering the course.”

Situated near Malelane in Mpumalanga, Leopard Creek covers 360 hectares. It is bordered to the north and west by the picturesque Crocodile River and also the Kruger National Park.

Can anyone play Leopard Creek?

Leopard Creek is a private Country Club with a Championship course as well as a par 3 course.

However, despite being private it is quite possible to play the course if you are a non-member.

The only conditions for playing Leopard Creek are that you book a stay at their lodge or one of their affiliate lodges nearby and pay the eye-watering green fees.

The club has green fees of R6300 (£264 or $335) per person, which includes the use of a golf cart and halfway house offering.

Leopard Creek ranks as the most expensive course in South Africa to play as a visitor, and the club also has the steepest membership fees in the country.

Visitors from out of country might look on those green fees and wonder how that is the most expensive round in the country, but you could play several rounds at courses ranked inside the top 10 in South Africa for that price.

However, Leopard Creek is still an experience in bushveld golf albeit an exclusive one.
