How confident are you in Matt Eberflus heading into his third season?

After the 2023 season, I wanted the Chicago Bears to clean house and bring in an entirely new coaching staff. Even though the arrow of the defense was pointing up, I felt the team underachieved with head coach Matt Eberflus at the helm. There were too many late-game failures and conservative moments on both sides of the ball.

But ‘Flus survived.

He turned nearly his entire offensive coaching staff over and started to win me back with the choices. Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was a home run. He was the most sought-after playcaller of the coaching cycle. Offensive passing game coordinator Thomas Brown and quarterbacks coach Kerry Joseph are up-and-coming assistants. The offensive staff feels like one that will teach some modern football.

Eberlus plans to call the D at least for one more season, but his new defensive coordinator, Eric Washington, brings plenty of experience.

Even with a rookie quarterback, he should have confidence in his offense and be willing to loosen the reins a bit. We saw him get more aggressive on defense at times last year when necessary.

I like the plan that’s in place.

But will it come to fruition?

His off-the-field stuff has been great, but his in-game decision-making needs to improve.

Coaches can develop over time as well as players can, so the hope is that Eberflus has grown through his first two years on the job.
