‘Granny’ Danielle Collins has great reaction to achieving Serena Williams feat

Danielle Collins was absolutely delighted at seeing that she became the oldest player since Serena Williams to win 15 consecutive matches on the WTA Tour- level matches as Collins jokingly called herself “a granny” and added who would have thought that she would be able to pull off such a feat at this stage of her career.

Collins, who turned 30 in December, won seven matches at the Miami Open in late March to win her first WTA 1000 title. 

After Collins won a hard-court tournament in Miami, the expectation was that she would certainly skip Charleston – a clay tournament that was starting just after Miami – but the American decided against doing so. However, switching surfaces was no problem for Collins, who won six additional matches in Charleston to win back-to-back titles for the first time in her career and improve to 13 consecutive wins.

After taking some time to rest, Collins returned to action at the ongoing Madrid Open, where she defeated Olga Danilovic and Jaqueline Cristian to get to 15 consecutive wins before losing to Aryna Sabalenka in the Madrid third round.

In 2015, when Williams was 33, she won back-to-back titles at the French Open and Wimbledon. During that period, Williams was at one point at 15 consecutive wins.

On her Instagram Story, Collins shared a post celebrating her milestone and wrote: “Who would of thought a granny like me could win 15 matches.” 

Also, Collins added two hashtags celebrating her milestone.

After winning Charleston and improving to 13 consecutive wins, even Collins appeared to be a bit surprised about winning a WTA 1000 and a WTA 500 tournament in such a short time. 

“I had a lot of matches in Miami, and I had a lot of matches here. I had, at one point in this tournament, two matches in one day, which is not easy to pull off. I don’t know if I’ve done that before as a professional. I feel like the last time I did that was like in 12-and-unders,” Collins said after winning Charleston.

“So to be able to physically battle and push myself to a new limit gives me a lot of confidence. I’ve been so happy to be, obviously, playing at the level that I’ve been playing, but to be able to back it up two weeks in a row has just been fantastic.”
