Golden Nuggets: What gives you the most concern heading into this playoff run?

Your daily San Francisco 49ers news for Friday, January 12th, 2024

Three things that could negatively impact 49ers’ Super Bowl quest

“In 17 games, the Niners trailed at halftime in three of them. They lost all three. They were behind entering the fourth quarter in four games. They lost all four of those, too. San Francisco was 12-2 in games it was either tied or leading at halftime, and one of those was a meaningless Week 18 game in which the Niners and Rams were resting starters.”

49ers’ Adam Peters is a hot name in the GM game. What happens if he leaves? (paywall)

“If something similar were to happen this year, Wilks’ targets might include quarterbacks coach Brian Griese, who’s had a major role in Brock Purdy’s development; Klint Kubiak, who essentially took over Slowik’s role in 2023; and tight ends coach Brian Fleury, who has a big hand in the 49ers’ running game.

One of the revelations of observing the 49ers’ halftime operations last year was watching Fleury write out the run plays while Kyle Shanahan scribbled the pass plays.”

Armstead, Brown return to 49ers practice; Greenlaw sits out

“One day after George Odum’s practice window was opened Wednesday, the safety and special teams ace was seen wearing a blue non-contact jersey during practice. He was joined by Ambry Thomas during defensive back warm-ups. The Michigan product missed the regular-season finale due to needing surgery on his hand.”

49ers mailbag: Can Jake Moody be trusted? Will Brock Purdy get Garoppolo’d? (paywall)

“Shanahan said Armstead was “doing better” and would “hopefully” be able to participate in Friday’s practice after returning Thursday. My read: The 49ers are confident Armstead will start in their divisional-playoff game, but could have concerns about his ability to finish.”

49ers Notebook: A peek at practice; Chase Young’s time to step up; Brandon Aiyuk speaks (briefly) on contract status; Kyle Shanahan now an elder statesman

“In 2019, we had a must win game in Seattle, and so we got that win,” Kittle told reporters Thursday. “Everybody played high intensity. Everyone was dialed in. So the following week was more like jog-through stuff. Today was definitely a full speed day. Guys flying around, guys competing.”

George Kittle, Fred Warner snipe over which side won at 49ers practice

“Perhaps the most important part of all of this is Warner talking about quarterback Brock Purdy, who apparently was sharp in his first action since Week 17. He was a healthy scratch for the season finale to give him an extra week to rest.”

Why Bosa believes 49ers QB Purdy is ‘mature beyond his years’

“Yeah, [Purdy’s approach] is definitely unique in today’s game,” Bosa told reporters. “People feel attacked and want to be defensive about certain things. But it shows [Purdy’s] maturity and understanding that there’s a reason things happen on the field. And being honest is a good way to go about it. Almost every play, you can explain exactly what went wrong.

While playing on the defensive side of the ball, Bosa still appreciates learning about Purdy’s role in San Francisco’s offense and how he owns every imperfection.

“I find it interesting when Kyle [Shanahan] explains the offensive stuff to [the defense]. It’s simple stuff and simple motion stuff that maybe was a little bit late and threw off the play or somebody missing one block. I think just being honest is a good way to go about your life, and [Purdy’s] kind of mature beyond his years.”
