“Defensive line coach Kris Kocurek said Beal was 245 pounds when he arrived last year. He’s already 12 to 15 pounds heavier.

“He’s been in the weight room hammering it out with Dustin Perry and added really good muscle to his body,” Kocurek said. “And now it’s just a matter of getting as many reps as he can.”

The 49ers like Beal, who played outside linebacker at Georgia, for his explosion off the edge, and they’ve been cautious about compromising that quickness with added weight. Kocurek said he thinks the second-year player has found a “sweet spot” that will allow him to be more effective as a run defender while maintaining his impressive get-off speed.”

Brandon Staley embracing ‘reset’ with 49ers as assistant head coach

“According to Shanahan, Staley’s role will continue to evolve. He will help Sorensen put together the game plan. And though it’s unclear where he will be coaching on game days, Staley could have some input into game management, as well. Staley also offered input for Lynch and his staff in draft preparation.

During the team’s OTAs on Tuesday, Staley was even seen playing the role of quarterback in the defensive install portion of practice. It’s something Shanahan has mostly done since his arrival in 2017, with Shanahan noting that his arm was a bit sore and joking that Staley “wanted to show me that he could do it better.”

Branch: What role will Brandon Staley, fired by Chargers last year, fill for the 49ers? (paywall)

“You don’t stray too far away from what makes you special,” Staley said. “The style of play of this team is what’s made it special. What we want to make sure we do is really focus on that: The details of how we play. What we play, that will take shape as we get to know our players here over the next couple of months because every group is a little bit different. The staples of what we’ve played at a high level here, we need to make sure those stay as strong as they have.”

Branch: Ask and he will attend: 49ers’ Nick Bosa arrives for the start of voluntary practices (paywall)

“Bosa offered an endorsement of Sorensen, who was promoted to coordinator and has an extensive background in the 49ers’ defense. Sorensen is replacing Steve Wilks, who lacked familiarity with their scheme and was fired after one season. Bosa offered a tepid endorsement of Wilks the day before he was fired, offering that the longtime defensive backs coach did a “great job” with the secondary before adding, “obviously we had some issues throughout this year.”

Bosa said Sorensen’s knowledge of the defense was reminiscent of former coordinator DeMeco Ryans, the Texans’ head coach who also was promoted by Shanahan.

“Knowing the system from the front to the back — I think (Sorensen) knows how it ties in and he’s been around some really good coaches,” Bosa said. “So I think it will be pretty seamless. I think we’ll be firing on all cylinders.”

Lombardi: 49ers’ Nick Bosa, in a twist, brings his veteran’s wit and wisdom to OTAs (paywall)

“I think he’s a super skilled rusher,” Bosa said of Floyd. “Good length. He’s more athletic than I even realized. Guys like him, when they come into our scheme, the best is brought out of them. So I’m excited to see what potential he has. He’s Year 9, and I feel as a D-lineman you can keep improving all the way through 10 years in this league.”
