Girona plunges Seville a little more into the crisis

on

The 17th day of La Liga continued this Saturday afternoon with the trip of Sevilla FC, in bad shape in the standings, to Catalonia to face Girona FC, at the Montilivi stadium. Jorge Sampaoli’s players fell against the Gironistes (2-1). The first period was rich in twists and turns, as the locals quickly deployed to get opportunities but the strikes of Aleix Garcia (4th) then Cristhian Stuani (5th) were repelled by the Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, author of five parades. Despite Girona’s good start, it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the wake of French defender Tanguy Nianzou on a cross from Ivan Rakitić (13th). At the break, Sevilla led even as Michel’s players dominated and got many more chances with a total of 14 shots attempted in the first act, but without realism or efficiency.

In the second half, the Girona team was quick to equalize. Toni Villa offered a nice pass to Stuani which allowed the Uruguayan to reset the counters at the start of the second period (46th). And as the final whistle approached, Yangel Herrera, who entered the game, took advantage of a big defensive error when Nianzou restarted, to lob Bounou and thus seal the victory for his team (88th). Note the first tenure of Loïc Badé in the Sevillian defense. In the standings, Sevilla FC is on the verge of relegation in 17th position. Girona pocket three precious points to climb to 11th place. Next weekend, the Andalusians will welcome their neighbors from Cadiz, while the Catalans will go to Villarreal as part of the 18th day of the Spanish championship.
