New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley and QB Daniel Jones

The New York Giants have signed Daniel Jones to a four-year deal worth $160 million, according to reports from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and New York Post’s Ryan Dunleavy. Rapoport added that the deal will include up to $35 million in additional incentives.

After being paired with new head coach Brian Daboll, Jones posted a career-high 396 DYAR and his first-ever positive DVOA in 2022. The Giants finished 10th in the league in offensive DVOA, their first top-ten finish as an offense since 2012. Jones and Daboll also helped bring home New York’s first playoff victory since the Giant’s Super Bowl run in 2011.

Jones was originally set to receive the franchise tag before securing a long-term deal. Because the two parties reached an extension, the Giants have now placed the franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley. Barkley will be retained on a $10.1 million contract for 2023.

Barkley earned a Comeback Player of the Year nomination off the heels of his best DYAR performance since his rookie season. He posted a career-high 1,312 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 295 carries, playing 16 games for the first time since 2018.

Feels like The Loser’s Curse here

but then again that’s the whole offseason for everyone in the QB market apparently

A lot would depend on the guarantees, but this is at a figure where there’s a real danger he turns into an albatross contract.

If a player is not very good, aren’t all the contracts above 15-20 million per year in albatross-range? Is there such a big difference between 28 million and 36 million per year if neither player is elite-level? Or in another words, why do commenters here only ridicule Cousins contract?

I don’t know.

Cousins is an internet hate figure for various reasons. But the mid-tier QB market is a dumb place to spend $$.

For some reason the Giants won a few close games over the Commanders and Vikings and we all decided “the Giants have their guy”

Because Cousins is obviously overpaid. He’s a not a bad QB, all things being equal, but his cap cost pretty much precludes a team from playing in a championship game because he doesn’t leave enough cap space to build a roster that covers his shortcomings.

I’d hate to see my team sign him because he’s the sort of player that is content not win a Superbowl if that means he’s getting more than market value. As a fan, I’d rather watch my team win the Superbowl than have an expensive QB.
