New York Giants news for Friday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Rookie mini-camp to begin

The Giants will hold their rookie mini-camp Friday and Saturday at Quest Diagnostics. Draft picks, undrafted free agents and rookie camp invites will all be on the field over the two days. Big Blue View will be on hand Friday and possibly Saturday to bring you first-hand information.

Most improved secondaries after the 2024 NFL Draft: Eagles, Ravens lead the way | PFF

Though the Giants made only two secondary selections, they targeted players who fit their scheme for a potential year-one impact. Nubin is a solid safety, one the Giants needed after losing Xavier McKinney in free agency. Nubin can play both free and strong safety, though he is best as a strong safety in robber coverage roles over the middle.

Phillips to the Giants was one of my favorite prospect-team fits of any selection in the draft. His press-man coverage style fits perfectly with New York’s 2023 first-round pick, Deonte Banks. Now they can get even more aggressive to play Cover 1, Cover 0 or 2-Man.

Drew Lock will have a chance to make his case

Giants banking on rookie Tyrone Tracy despite limited time at RB | New York Post

Of the six prospects the Giants selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, Tyrone Tracy is probably the most intriguing and impossible to gauge, given his advanced age, inexperience as a running back and potential to hit big or not at all.

“There are plenty of guys that are a little bit older, they’re not mature,’’ said Lamar Conard, the running backs coach at Purdue. “They can’t take hard coaching or the criticism that comes with the job. He can do all of that and then some. Believe it or not, I think his best football is still ahead of him because he’s so young at the position. From a talent perspective, man, he’s got it.’’

Who will be the biggest surprise? Cornerback Nick McCloud. Never heard of him? That’s because he hasn’t had a chance to be a consistent starter in three professional seasons. But with only one cornerback penciled in to the lineup for new coordinator Shane Bowen, the opportunity is there for McCloud. He allowed 5.7 yards per target last season as the nearest defender, per NFL Next Gen Stats. That was the lowest of any defensive back on the Giants, including Banks.

2025 NFL Draft: Ranking the top 5 teams expected to be in the mix for a QB | CBSSports.com

1. New York Giants. Daniel Jones should feel fortunate to still have the Giants starting gig after a disastrous two-touchdown, six-interception 2023 that ended prematurely due to a knee-ligament tear. There’s a relatively clean out from the Jones deal for the Giants after this season. He represents a $41M cap hit in 2025 with $22M in dead cap if released before June 1. Outside of Jones miraculously playing much differently and more effectively than ever before in the NFL, the Giants will be the most “in” on the 2025 draft class of quarterbacks.

“It’s Mine!” Kicker Graham Gano Has Message for New Teammate Malik Nabers | SI.com

New York Giants first-round draft pick Malik Nabers will reportedly wear jersey No. 9 during this weekend’s rookie minicamp. But the former LSU star better not get too attached to the number that currently belongs to kicker Graham Gano.

If there’s any doubt about that, Gano posted a humorous reply to stake his claim in the number on his social media account, which declared, “It belongs to me.”
