New York Giants news for Tuesday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

The Daniel Jones question looms over the future of the New York Giants

Jones was efficient in 2022 in Brian Daboll’s first year as head coach, a big part of the reason the Giants reached the playoffs and ultimately earned their first playoff victory since 2012. Jones’ two years under Joe Judge weren’t impressive. Neither was last season, a year abbreviated by injuries that left a lot to be desired even when he was playing.

Jones, once he is recovered from his 2023 torn ACL, gets another chance in 2024 to show the Giants he is their guy. That Dave Gettleman was right to select him in 2019 and that Joe Schoen wasn’t foolish to give him that four-year, $160 million contract.

Can he? The eventual answer could make a huge difference in both the upcoming season and the long-term future of the franchise.

How quickly might Giants replace Daniel Jones with Drew Lock? | nj.com

Daniel Jones remains the Giants’ starting quarterback — but for how much longer?

That’s the big question coming out of the 2024 NFL Draft, during which general manager Joe Schoen didn’t pick a quarterback at all, after trying hard to trade up for Drake Maye.

Paul Schwartz on the status of marriage Daniel Jones marriage with the Giants:

They were not so desperate to replace Jones that they were willing at No. 6 to take a quarterback — J.J. McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr. or Bo Nix — that they did not believe was worth that slot. They knew they could stand pat and get a top-end wide receiver, and they believe Malik Nabers will be a difference-maker. They got better by taking him. And they are cognizant that, at least for this season, they have to try to make it work with Jones.

Can it? Can Jones stay healthy and benefit from how Nabers enhances the entire passing game, with an upgraded offensive line and, maybe, Daboll taking over the play-calling on offense? Jones got a text from Schoen before the Nabers selection was announced, alerting Jones that the Giants added a major weapon. Unspoken but understood in that communication: Daniel, we took a wide receiver, which means we did not trade up for a quarterback, which means you are our guy again.

3. Malik Nabers, WR, New York Giants. Of the top three receivers in this draft class, Nabers will need the most development and he’s more scheme-dependent than Odunze and Marvin Harrison Jr. Nabers will have some trouble against press coverage early in his career and he’ll have to expand his route tree. He needs to be in a system with coaches who can design ways to get the ball in his hands and Kafka and head coach Brian Daboll have shown they can do that. Kafka will draw up creative screens for Nabers and utilize motion to keep defenders from being able to press Nabers too often.

7. New York Giants. Day 3 pick who could surprise: Tyrone Tracy Jr., RB, Purdue. Devin Singletary and Eric Gray are solid players, but Tracy has an opportunity to make an immediate impact, both on offense and as a return man. The former wide receiver is at his best as a pass catcher, but as long as he has a lane, Tracy can create big plays. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention TE Theo Johnson, as well, whose value could climb if Darren Waller doesn’t return in 2024.
