Jets general manager Joe Douglas spoke with local sports radio show DiPietro and Rothenberg this morning. ESPN’s Rich Cimini provided a summary of the topics mentioned.

* Aaron Rodgers is “moving around well … slinging the ball as well as ever.”

* Plan is to play Olu Fashanu at LT, but he will get practice reps at RT and maybe other positions. (This sounded more routine than some grand plan.)

* Wouldn’t say if they tried to trade up for Rome Odunze. (They did.)

* Started making calls at pick 45 to trade up for Malachi Corley. (Got him at 65.)

* Jordan Travis “got better and better and better” in college. Can play on schedule. Quick eyes. Compact delivery. Accurate on slot fade. Hackett and Downing visited Travis in his hometown in Florida.

* Still looking to add vets, but “we don’t have a lot left in the budget to spend.” (Safety remains a need.)

* On the ‘24 season: “We understand the pressure. We know what the stakes are.”

The part about Fashanu moving around a bit probably isn’t as big of a deal as it might seem on the first look. Teams usually do not carry ten offensive linemen on their 53 man roster. That means backups need to be able to play multiple spots. In the short run, Fashanu is a backup even if he projects to take over as starting left tackle in a year.

The comment about Corley is not a great surprise. It was well-known that the Jets were very, very high on their eventual third round pick and aggressively made the move to get him. Some reports suggest he was rated as the fourth best wide receiver on their board behind Marvin Harrison Jr. Malik Nabers, and Rome Odunze.

Perhaps the most notable piece of news were Douglas’ comments about the budget. The trade of John Franklin-Myers cleared salary cap space, but that seems more to give the Jets enough money to operate rather than to facilitate a spending spree. It does seem notable, however, that Douglas would single out the safety position. Perhaps that is the most likely area where money will be spent.
