Floodrush has been killed by Supercell, joins a long list of games

on

When the word Supercell is said, the immediate thought that pops up are great mobile games like Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars. However, there is one more thing the Finnish developer is famous for and that is killing games. Today, another game joined the legendary Supercell graveyard as the company announced it was halting development on its upcoming mobile strategy title, Floodrush.

Floodrush was first announced back in May 2023. Supercell usually makes games which can’t be defined by any particular genre and this wasn’t an exception. In this game, eight players are put into a map. They have to fight each other with different troops for victory. While the concept was great, it seems that it wasn’t enough to warrant a global release for the game.

Floodrush joins the Supercell graveyard as dev announces development halt

Supercell made a long blog post detailing its reasons behind killing off yet another game. The game was released in limited open beta for select countries back in May. The developer did this to invite players to test out the game and offer feedback.

Supercell said through these pieces of feedback, it recognized several issues with the gameplay mechanics, controls, character dynamics, artistic aspects, and more. The company added that to ensure that the game meets its standards, Floodrush needed to undergo significant changes which would be distant to their initial vision. Thus, the development of the game has been called off.

Floodrush’s future was already in question as soon as the game was announced. Many players complained that its artwork was distinct from other Supercell games while others said that it felt similar to Squad Busters. Many even said that the game might get killed off. It seems like they were right.

In its blog post, Supercell also spoke about the consequences of killing the game. It said that while this move might seem like a significant waste of time and resources, the experience gained it will prove to be invaluable.

“The ideas and insights gathered while developing Floodrush can, in many forms, be applied to other projects, either actual or forthcoming. That’s how we evolve as a company — by making the most out of adversity.”

Can the game come back?

It’s highly unlikely that Floodrush will ever come back now, but not completely impossible. Among the killed titles by Supercell, only one title has been able to be “un-killed” and that is Everdale.

Everdale first announced back in 2021 as a fantasy village-building game. However, after negative feedback, Supercell decided to sunset the title in October 2022. But, the developer announced last January that the game was coming back with a new dev. The company announced that Metacore would be taking over the development of Everdale.

It’s unlikely that Floodrush will follow a similar path, but one can hope.

Other games killed by Supercell are as follows:

  • Squad Busters
  • Boom Beach: Frontlines
  • Clash Quest
  • Hay Day Pop
  • Rush Wars
