Fabio Fognini: “I would like to win another title before I retire”

on

There weren’t great expectations for Italian tennis player Fabio Fognini before the start of the Australian Open 2023. The expert tennis player has made the recent history of Italian tennis but is now in the final phase of his career. Fabio spoke to the Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, and he revealed his latest goals.

Fognini won a Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo and now has one last big goal. Here are his words: “Before definitively saying goodbye and saying goodbye, I would like to win another tournament on the ATP Tour, in order to reach double figures. I don’t care about the city or the tournament, whether it’s a 250 or a 500, I want to prove to myself that I’m still competitive.”

Then a word also on the national team and Davis, after the latest disappointments: “There is always the Davis Cup even if we are talking about a team competition. On the other hand, I have always given my contribution.”

Fognini was eliminated cleanly in the first round in Melbourne, defeated by a few games won against the home idol Thanasi Kokkinakis. At the end of the tournament, the Ligurian athlete issued a statement and clarified that he had found a fracture of the phalanx.

A difficult start for the tennis player who plans to return soon and try to compete, also to achieve these last dreams. Tennis passes through Fabio Fognini and the Ligurian doesn’t want to know about definitively ending his career, at least for now. Photo Credit: Official InstagramFabio Fognini.

Italian delusions at the Australian Open 2023

The 2023 Australian Open has been over for several days but it was undoubtedly not a good tournament for the Italians. Number one Jannik Sinner made it to the Round of 16, fought to the finish against tournament finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas but succumbed in five sets.

Despite this, the South Tyrolean tennis player was the last to remain in the tournament while for the others there was a massacre from the first rounds. The biggest disappointments came from Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Musetti, both in the Top 25 of the tournament.
