England girls miss out on medal in marathon match

England girls missed out on a bronze medal at the ISF World Schools Gymnasiade in Brazil as they were beaten 5-2 by the host nation in a three-hour match.

Sienna Jetha was defeated 3-1 by Abigail Araujo in the first match, and it was 2-0 when Julia Hatakeyama overcame Jonabel Taguibao in three.

Ella pashley got England on the board with a 3-2 (11-3, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5) victory over Maria Rodrigues but she and Jetha were then beaten in four in the doubles.

Hatakeyama then resisted fierce pressure from Jetha to win 3-2 (11-7, 9-11, 11-2, 9-11, 11-9) to put the result beyond doubt, though Pashley gained another point for England with a 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9) victory over Araujo. Rodrigues completed a 5-2 win for the hosts by defeating Taguibao in four.

England boys, already with a bronze medal in their pockets, were beaten 7-0 by champions China. Every match finished 3-0 bar the doubles, which was 3-1, but there were some close games involved.

Attention now turns to the individual events.
