Edge’s idea to bring in Gangrel at WrestleMania was ‘shut down’ by ‘every person’ in WWE

Edge fought “The Demon” Finn Balor in a Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania 39 in 2023.

Given the theme of the match and the characters involved, a lot of wrestling fans thought it would be cool for Gangrel to make a cameo during a nostalgic Brood entrance for Edge. The rumor mill even indicated this was part of WWE’s plan. Edge did have a special Brood-like entrance for the match, but Gangrel was nowhere to be seen.

During an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Edge said he tried to make it happen, but all the decision-makers in WWE rejected the idea because they didn’t think fans would remember:

“Man, I tried. I tried, and I just got shut down. Every person shut it down.

So, and this isn’t a knock on WWE, but I’d always get the, ‘Well nobody remembers.’ I’m like, people remember. Wrestling fans remember. And I think wrestling fans want to be rewarded for remembering, and that’s a way to reward them. That’s what I’ve always felt.

You fast forward to me and Matt Cardona doing a Cope Open, and his music hits and he comes out. I mean, they remembered! So, I’ve always been a fan of pulling in things from the past and kind of integrating them into current things.

But yeah, that was one I just kept getting shut down. I realized, okay, that’s not a hill to die on, ‘cause it ain’t gonna happen…it’s not my sandbox, so I just got to do what I can with what I’m given.”

It’s too bad that every person in WWE shut down what sounded like a legitimately cool idea for Edge’s match at WrestleMania.
