Djokovic and Sinner fight for the ATP No.1: all Roland Garros scenarios

on

On the eve of the Roland Garros Novak Djokovic is still the ATP No.1, but what will the new ranking be like after the Parisian major? Will the Serbian be able to maintain the throne of men’s tennis or will he be overtaken by Jannik Sinner? Djokovic was eliminated in the semifinals at the ATP 250 in Geneva, obtaining 100 points. What will Sinner need to overtake Djokovic in the ATP ranking after Paris and thus become the new number one in the world? And, on the contrary, what will Nole need to maintain his leadership in the ranking?

On Monday 27 May 2024, the two will begin the Roland Garros with the following points:

Jannik Sinner 8725
Novak Djokovic 7960

If he were to achieve an important result in the two weeks in Paris, Sinner could aspire to overtake Djokovic. The Serbian champion will certainly be called upon to push himself to the final stages of the competition, having to defend the 2000 points achieved last year. Sinner, on the contrary, will only lose 45 points given that in 2023 he was defeated in the second round.

If Djokovic doesn’t reach the semifinals, Jannik is sure to become the new ATP No.1 regardless of his result. If Novak were to stop in the semifinals, Sinner will need to reach at least the second round. If Djokovic reaches the Paris final, the Italian will necessarily have to reach the semi-final. In the event that the Serb reconfirms himself as champion in Paris, Jannik will be obliged to play in the final of the tournament.

Carlos Alcaraz, like Alexander Zverev or Daniil Medvedev, will not be able to worry Djokovic at Roland Garros. For the very young Spaniard, the absence from the Italian Internationals was fatal. If the attempt is not successful, Sinner will have a new opportunity at Wimbledon, as even in the third Slam of the year he has fewer points to defend than Djokovic.
