With the team choosing to move on from Ezekiel Elliott last offseason, and Tony Pollard moving on to Tennessee this offseason, 2024 is officially destined for a complete reset at the position in Dallas. As of now, Rico Dowdle is the most reliable option on the roster.

It has been assumed that the Cowboys will be taking one of the backs in this upcoming class for much of the offseason. However, according to one NFL insider, the Cowboys may have one specific guy in mind and even went as far as to say it would be a surprise to see them pass him up.

Cowboys taking Jonathon Brooks at pick 56?

ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter released “NFL draft week intel” on Monday morning, following what he said was from days of phone calls. Among all of the notes Schefter had spread throughout the league, one note in particular should be of interest to Cowboys Nation.

In his article, Schefter speaks about the Cowboys and their worst-kept secret interest in Texas Longhorns’ RB Jonathon Brooks. While many had assumed the Cowboys have had an interest in the Longhorns’ star, Schefter went as far as to say that some around the league would be surprised if the Cowboys passed up the chance to take him in the second round.

The connection between the player and the team is there and it makes for an obvious fit. The Cowboys have a need at the position, and Brooks’ situation is the exact type of scenario Dallas likes to invest in. A star running back with production, and is viewed by many as the best at his position, but is also coming off a major injury that seems to be affecting his draft stock.

Add in the fact the Cowboys team doctor is the one who surgically repaired his knee, and the all-familiar situation of the Cowboys having more information than the rest of the league puts more merit to this whole thing.

This is the exact type of move the Cowboys have been known to make, and while the second round seems a bit rich for a running back to some, Schefter is hearing around the league that if available, many expect the team to pull the trigger.

With just days until the draft kicks off officially, information regarding the Cowboys targets for the upcoming weekend is becoming clearer. Cowboys Nation should be prepared for a possible in-state running back to stay home.
