Collin Morikawa’s collapse, 3 bogeys in a row

on

He finished 2022 with a win on the DP World Tour in Dubai and opened 2023 with a PGA Tour triumph in the Sentry Tournament of Champions after a show comeback.

Jon Rahm’s golden moment continues and at the Plantation Course (par 73) in Kapalua, in the county of Maui, he signed one of the greatest feats of his career. The Spaniard started the fourth round seven shots late from Collin Morikawa but, with a final round in 63 (-10) out of a total of 265 (64 71 67 63, -27) shots, he triumphed also taking advantage of the collapse in the last holes by the American, 2/o with 267 (-25) ahead of compatriots Tom Hoge and Max Homa, both 3/i with 269 (-23).

Collin Morikawa, results

He has the incredible what happened in Hawaii where Rahm closed the ‘moving day’ in fifth place. Then, he started the fourth round with a bogey. Therefore, the decisive swerve arrived in the second nine holes where he made four birdies (eight total) and an eagle in the last seven plays. The exploits of the Basque were facilitated by the collapse of Morikawa who ‘scored’ three consecutive bogeys (from 14 to 16) which made him lose certainties and chances of victory.

For Rahm, the 28-year-old from Barrika, this is the eighth success (in 133 appearances) on the circuit (a figure including a Major, the US Open he made his own in 2021), which earned him $2,700,000 for a total prize pool of 15,000,000 in a high event of the PGA Tour. That last year Rahm finished in second place behind the Australian Cameron Smith, this time absent because he has now moved to LIV Golf, the Arab Super League.

Rahm thus equaled Gary Player who in 1978 conquered the Sentry Tournament after a great comeback.

The exploit allowed the Iberian to move to fourth place both in the world ranking and in the FedEx Cup. Not only Morikawa. Among the disappointed in the competition there is also Scottie Scheffler. The American has once again squandered the chance to return number 1 in the world and has not taken advantage of the absence of Rory McIlroy, leader of the world ranking. A third place in Hawaii would have been enough for Scheffler to take back the scepter and instead the king of The Masters 2022 did not go beyond 7th place with a score of 271 (-22). Second at the end of the third round, he didn’t shine in the final.
