Coinbox Smash Events Might be in Danger From Nintendo Tournament Guidelines

This week has been a disappointing one for Smash fans. Nintendo dropped new tighter restrictions on tournaments, and we’re already seeing cancelations as a result. Most recently, Hungrybox has spoken out about the future of the Coinbox Smash events.

These latest changes are spelling trouble for a lot of smaller Smash Bros events. With more recent Coinboxes moving into Melee, we’ve seen some interesting tournaments. We might not be seeing any more of these though. Hungrybox has taken to Twitter to talk about the future of the tournament.

Coinbox Melee’s Future

The future of Coinbox Melee is a bit up in the air after the recent changes to Smash Bros Tournament Guidelines. It’s left smaller tournaments unsure about their future. Locals in particular may be hit hard. However, even some bigger events will see problems. For Coinbox Smash events, it could present some problems with the sponsorships and Melee as a whole.

Coinbox is a tournament which alternates between Melee and Ultimate. It’s an event which runs based on its sponsorship, which is even right there in the name. Coinbase, the Crypto exchange, has sponsored the tournament for a long time. The new Nintendo guidelines makes these kinds of tournaments tricky.

Hungrybox has expressed some optimism about the future of events. He started by saying that tournaments like coinbox or larger regionals wouldn’t be able to “fly under the radar” in terms of attention by Nintendo They would have to get licenses.

Hungrybox added that Coinbox can’t continue until he can get it licensed. This might mean that the Coinbox Melee events don’t have a future at all. These events run on a modded version of the game, which makes licencing from Nintendo difficult. The Coinbox situation is just one example of how the new guidelines are hitting Smash organizers, this has become a common problem.

Hungrybox has said they’ll be applying for a license from Nintendo.
