Os Cobras’ player roster has grown by one. Donnacha Byrne has joined the Brazilian team from Ireland. He will play for the franchise in Super Rugby Americas 2023. Byrne is to be the first Irishman to play professional rugby for the Brazilian team.
The 21-year-old has arrived in São Paulo. He joins 36 players presently on the roster. Spanish hooker Diego Vidal is eligible for Brazil as is New Zealand second-rower Ben Donald. The four other names from abroad are Argentines. They are second-rower Lucio Anconetani, tight head prop Bautista Vidal, scrum-half Facundo Villalba, and fly half Nicolás Cantarutti.
Byrne’s position is flanker. He previously played for Ireland u20 in the 2021 Six Nations. He featured for Connacht from 2020-2022 and joins from Sligo RFC, the same club that coach Josh Reeves played rugby for in Ireland. Byrne is 1,89m tall and weighs 109 kg.
