Taking a look at Cleveland’s quarterback room before team activities begin

The Cleveland Browns are officially heading into the first portion of their practice schedule on May 10th beginning with their rookie minicamp.

OTA’s (Organized team activities) begin shortly after that on May 21st, which marks the first time that the entire team has an opportunity to work together. Before that time comes, it’s important to take a look at each of Cleveland’s position groups.

Today we’re going to dive into the Browns’ quarterback room as it currently stands.

Current Roster (4)

Deshaun Watson

2023 Stats: 1,115 passing yards, 61.4% comp., 7 TD, 4 INT, 6.5 yards/att.

Watson played better than many people think in 2023, going 5-1 in his six starts before being placed on IR due to an injured shoulder. He appears to be back on track and ready to go heading into the practice portion of the 2024 offseason schedule.

PFF Grade: 67.3

Jameis Winston

2023 Stats: 264 passing yards, 53.2% comp., 2 TD, 3 INT, 5.6 yards/att.

Winston is known around the league for being one of the better backup quarterbacks and he gives Cleveland a more legitimate option behind Deshaun Watson. He raises the floor of the position group in terms of overall talent as well.

PFF Grade: 56.3

Dorian Thompson-Robinson

2023 Stats: 440 passing yards, 53.6% comp., 1 TD, 4 INT, 3.9 yards/att.

“DTR” performed adequately well in his three starts in 2023, but he still needs time to develop and learn. He should be able to do that in the 2024 season now that Jameis Winston is in the picture.

PFF Grade: 49.3

Tyler Huntley

2023 Stats: 203 passing yards., 56.8% comp., 3 TD, 0 INT, 7.1 yards/att.

Huntley spent the last four seasons in Baltimore and has been the Ravens’ go-to option behind Lamar Jackson. He’ll add more competition behind Watson and Winston with the idea of ensuring growth and development in the room throughout the summer.

PFF Grade: 63.8

Rookie Minicamp Invite

Jacob Sirmon – Northern Colorado

2023 Stats: 1255 passing yards, 56.4% comp., 8 TD, 9 INT, 5.3 yards/att.

The team extended a rookie minicamp invite to the 6’5”, 230-pound Sirmon, who has displayed a big arm in his eight starts for Northern Colorado in 2023. He’s most likely being brought in to be a “camp” arm throughout the first part of team activities.

Projected Depth Chart (3)

QB1 – Deshaun Watson

QB2 – Jameis Winston

QB3 – Dorian Thompson-Robinson

Andrew Berry stated in an early offseason press conference that the team is planning on keeping three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster as opposed to their “usual” amount of two in 2024.
