Bobby Green isn’t counting out Tony Ferguson.
Earlier this year, Green submitted Tony Ferguson with an arm-triangle choke in the waning seconds of their matchup at UFC 291. The loss was Ferguson’s sixth straight (fourth by stoppage) and increased calls from fans that Ferguson hang up the gloves.
Ever the maverick, Ferguson disregarded such talk and instead will now face Paddy Pimblett at UFC 296. Given that Pimblett is riding a six-fight winning streak, many believe Ferguson is in for yet another long night, but Green isn’t as sure.
“[Ferguson] can take a good shot,” Green said recently on The MMA Hour. “I think he can pull off the win. It’s just mental with Tony, the way he’s thinking. Like in our fight, some of the choices he made, I was like, ‘Why did he choose to do that? That was kind of stupid.’ He tried to do that Imanari roll. I hit him with a shot right on his s***. Like, bro, I saw that s*** coming a mile away. Why’d you do that? That was stupid. You’d have been better off sticking with striking more. You were coming with a lot of pressure. I would have stuck with that game plan more than going and doing that. Why’d you do that? He was eating shots, so I can see why he changed it, but f***, I don’t know if I would have done that.
“So, little things. If he makes smart decisions, he can win. But sometimes I’m like, bro, are you f****** stupid? Or is there something off in his brain? Even when I listen to his interviews — I rant too. Trust me, I rant, so I get what people think. But I don’t think he stays on topic, to where he answers a question a little bit, and then he just goes way off. I know I’m kind of like that too, but there’s a difference to what we’re both doing.
“But yeah, I think he’s going to win.”
Not many people agree with Green, as Ferguson is a hefty betting underdog at the moment.
UFC 296 takes place on Dec. 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and is currently set to be headlined by a welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington.
