Bianca Andreescu reflects on highly-impressive career start, then things going south

Bianca Andreescu, 22, admits she thought that she would only go up after a highly-impressive start to her career in 2019.

In 2019, Andreescu introduced herself to the tennis world in quite some style, winning a Grand Slam and two WTA 1000 events as a teenager.

After winning a total of four titles and achieving a career-high ranking of No 4 in 2019, Andreescu was tipped to achieve a lot more success in the near future.

But then, Andreescu started battling injuries and also experiencing mental health issues – which led to the Canadian taking an indefinite break from tennis in 2021 December.

Last April, Andreescu told WTA Insider ahead of her comeback: “I’m being really honest here, but I actually wanted to quit the sport, it was really bad.”

Andreescu, who hasn’t won any titles since 2019, is now healthy and in a good place mentally as she aims to again win the biggest titles in the world.

Andreescu on her strong 2019 season, things going south

“Looking back at 2019, I always thought I’m just going to improve and improve. Like, I’m just going to get better. Then a lot of stuff happened and kind of went the opposite way. I mean, I always look back at 2019, but I also want to stay in the present moment. It’s always nice to have that reminder of I’m a Grand Slam champion because sometimes I forget,” Andreescu said, per France24.

In late March, Andreescu suffered a scary injury in Miami.

Fortunately, Andreescu avoided a really serious injury as she was able to return a month later in Madrid.

Andreescu acknowledges there is no formula to constantly stay healthy but noted she is doing her best to avoid setbacks.

“I wish I knew. I would tell the whole world. Honestly, I’m trying to figure it out. There’s good days; there’s bad days. I mean, that’s sport. You are never always going to play 100 percent unless you’re Carlos Alcaraz right now and Iga (Swiatek). Jokes aside, I’m just trying to give my best every single day. I know if I stay patient, results will come,” Andreescu said.

Meanwhile, Andreescu has been through to the French Open third round.
