BCCI approaches Gautam Gambhir for India's head coach role

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing for a major transition as Rahul Dravid‘s tenure as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team is set to conclude following the 2024 T20 World Cup in June. Dravid, who has been at the helm since 2021, has reportedly decided not to pursue an extension of his contract.

Under Dravid’s guidance, Team India has experienced mixed fortunes across formats. While the team showed moments of brilliance, they also faced significant challenges, particularly in ICC tournaments. With Dravid’s decision to step down, the BCCI is now actively seeking a successor to lead the team forward.

BCCI approaches Gautam Gambhir to replace Rahul Dravid

In a move to ensure continuity and fresh leadership, the BCCI has approached former India batter Gautam Gambhir to take over as the head coach. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, Gambhir, who is currently mentoring the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, has emerged as the top candidate for the prestigious role.

Gambhir’s coaching journey and IPL success

Notably, Gambhir has been involved in coaching and mentoring roles within the IPL for several years. He previously served as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2022 and 2023, leading them to the playoffs in both seasons. In 2024, the former cricketer took on the mentorship of KKR, who have finished the league stage on top of the points table and are strong candidates to lift the IPL trophy for the third time.

BCCI’s timeline and process for new head coach

Notably, the BCCI has set a deadline of May 27, a day after the IPL final, for applications for the head coach position. This timeline is crucial as it allows the board to assess potential candidates and make a timely decision.

The new head coach will take charge from July 2024 and will be responsible for leading the team across all three formats until December 2027. With Gambhir at the forefront of their considerations, the BCCI is keen on securing a leader who can build on Dravid’s legacy and propel Indian cricket to new heights.
