Baron Corbin defends Trick Williams from criticism that he ‘isn’t that good’

on

Trick Williams beat Carmelo Hayes in a steel cage match in the main event of this week’s episode of NXT.

Here’s an exchange that Wrestling Observer Radio’s Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer had about the match:

Alvarez: “This match was good, and there was good heat, but it was kind of like their Stand & Deliver match where something was just missing. I don’t know what it was.”

Meltzer: “Trick isn’t that good. That’s the reality. He’s got incredible, incredible charisma, but you put him in a main event match…and granted he did look really good with Ilja [Dragunov], but Ilja is one of those people that he gives you a false perception of the ability of the other person.”

Meltzer agreed the match was good and pointed out it did a great quarter hour rating for NXT. However, he thinks Trick’s weaknesses as an in-ring worker were apparent without a super worker like Ilja Dragunov in there with him who consistently makes decent wrestlers look great.

Baron Corbin saw Meltzer’s take and responded with his own:

“Trick is dope and gets better every time he steps in the ring! Charisma connects you to the people, the people buy your merch and tune in to see you. They don’t give a shit if you’re the best technical wrestler ever. Trick will be extremely successful!”

“I’m just giving my opinion just as Dave does. I don’t care about his as he doesn’t care about mine. As for those opinions people can like which ever they want. I won’t lose sleep over any of it. I’m just saying trick is dope and he is working his ass off.”

Trick is back in the main event next week when he challenges Dragunov for the NXT Championship, with the caveat that Trick has to leave NXT if he doesn’t win the belt. That means either Trick becomes the new champ and continues his hot run in NXT, or he will leave the brand and head up to the main roster.

Do you think Trick’s overwhelming charisma is such that he can be a big hit on the WWE main roster right now, or would it be best for him to continue working main event matches in NXT while improving his work in the ring?
