Australian Open: Jannik Sinner wins first Major title over Daniil Medvedev

Jannik Sinner claimed his first Major title at 22 years and five months. Jannik conquered the Australian Open following a 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Daniil Medvedev after three hours and 45 minutes. Thus, Sinner followed Nadal’s feat from two years ago, overcoming a massive deficit and lifting his first Major trophy. Medvedev served at 86% in the opening set and made a huge difference in comparison to Sinner’s 54%. The Russian dropped four points behind the initial shot and grabbed two breaks from five opportunities for an early advantage. Medvedev held after deuce in the second game and broke Sinner at 15 in the next one to gather a boost. Daniil produced fine holds in games four, six and eight, controlling the pace behind the initial shot and forging a 5-3 advantage.

After two fine holds following that break he suffered, Jannik served to stay in the set in game nine and faced three set points. The Russian seized the third, moving 6-3 in front in under 40 minutes. Daniil served at 50%, but it did not affect him much, losing serve once after already moving in front and keeping his pace on the return to forge a massive two sets to love advantage. Jannik denied four break points in the second game, avoiding an early upset. However, Daniil delivered three holds at love, holding with ease and keeping the pressure on the other side. Sinner squandered a game point at 1-2 and suffered a costly break that sent him behind. Firing from all cylinders, Medvedev held at love in game five and delivered another break in the next one for a huge 5-1 advantage.

Daniil served for the set in game seven and suffered a break that did not cost him much. Sinner held in game eight to prolong the set and created a break chance at 3-5. Daniil denied it and held for 6-3, opening two sets to love advantage. Sinner served better in the third set, producing five fine holds and delivering a late break to extend the battle and his chances. They stayed neck and neck in the opening nine games, with the Italian moving 5-4 in front. The Russian served to stay in the set in the tenth game and suffered a break to drop serve 6-4 and keep his rival in contention. With a boost on his side, Sinner created a break chance in the fourth set’s games two and four. Medvedev denied them and held for 2-2, remaining on the positive side. Jannik overcame a break chance in the seventh game with an ace and held for 4-3. Daniil grabbed the eighth game after deuce and locked the result at 4-4.

The Italian grabbed the ninth game at 15 and pushed strong on the return in the next one. Jannik prolonged the game with a forehand drive-volley winner and created a set point after Daniil’s loose backhand. The young gun seized it, wrapping up the set 6-4 and forcing a decider after three hours and six minutes. They served well in the opening four games, and Sinner clinched the fifth with a forehand down the line winner for a 3-2 advantage. Jannik pushed strong on the return in game six and fired a forehand crosscourt winner for a break and a 4-2 lead. They served well in games seven and eight, with Sinner serving for the victory at 5-3. The Italian earned a match point with a winner and seized it to conquer his first Major trophy.
