Iga Swiatek didn’t encounter many problems in her second match at the 2023 Australian Open. The world no. 1 came through her round-of-64 match against Camila Osorio, 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday morning after an hour and 24 minutes.
The Pole won 62% of her first-serve points and 65% points on return on the Colombian’s first serve. She had 19 winners and 16 unforced errors to her opponent’s 16 winners and 14 unforced errors. Swiatek also converted six of eight break points while saving two of the five break points, she faced.

Starting the match, Swiatek built a quick 4-0 lead for herself courtesy of a double break but dropped her serve while trying to consolidate the second break. Osorio’s serve let her down at that moment as she was unable to consolidate on the break back. The set’s conclusion was also determined by a service break – on Osorio’s serve – as neither player was able to do enough to retain serve and take control over the decisive moments of the set.
Swiatek began the second set as she’d done the first – with a couple of service breaks to go up 5-1. And as had happened in the opening set, she lost her serve while trying to serve for the match at 5-2. However, while serving for the second time, Swiatek made no mistakes and secured the win for herself on the first of two match points she had.
Meanwhile, Jessica Pegula and Maria Sakkari, the two other top-eight seeds who played in the morning session also made it through to the round-of-32.
The third-seeded Pegula scored a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Sasnovich upped her level in the second set but Pegula withstood her long enough to claim a hard-fought win in the tie-break.
Sakkari, the sixth seed, however, had a tough time against qualifier Daria Shnaider. The Greek came from a set down against her teenage opponent, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to go into the third round.
Anhelina Kalinina went on to post the biggest upset of the day as she took out 2019 Australian Open finalist, 15th seed Petra Kvitova. Kalinina won 7-5, 6-4 against the erratic Czech after almost two hours of play.
