ASK THE MXPERTS: WHY NOT RIDE THE WIND WHILE WE ARE AT IT?

Have you considered Bruce Crower’s Steam-o-Lene six-stroke steam engine?

Dear MXA,
Why aren’t gas/electric hybrids being looked into for motocross use? I know weight is a factor, but I am sure something could be worked out. The electric motors have great acceleration and the internal combustion engines can handle the top-end. What’s the dilly oh?

What about the promise of the Pursuit 02 bike that runs on a scuba tank

Brilliant idea. What about adding solar cells and hoisting a mainsail? Hybrid engines, like those used on the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, are primarily employed to cut down on emissions and increase fuel mileage. Electric motors like those used on the new generation of electric bikes couldn’t get you home from a descent 40-mile trail ride through the desert. None of those are objectives of a racing motorcycle engine. But, there are always new ideas floating around about possible powerplants, but most don’t meet the the basics of motocross.
