The Arizona Cardinals add a running back with their first pick in the third round.

The Arizona Cardinals have added running back Trey Benson of Florida State with the 66th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

From Dane Brugler’s “The Beast”:

A two-year starter at Florida State, Benson was the lead back in head coach Mike Norvell’s up-tempo offense with mostly gap-scheme runs. After two seasons (and a major injury) at Oregon, he was consistently productive the past two seasons in Tallahassee, averaging 6.1 yards per carry over his Seminoles’ career. He also scored three touchdowns of 80-plus yards (in three different ways). Benson, who models his game after Adrian Peterson, runs with the plant-and-go explosiveness and run strength to rarely go down on initial contact and forces some missed tackles that defy gravity. Because the Florida State offense was committed to its package for backup running back Lawrance Toafili, Benson averaged just 13.5 offensive touches per game in 2023, but he showed key improvements as both a pass catcher and blocker.

The Cardinals have shown that the run game is going to be a massive part of their offense, and Benson at 6-0 and 221lbs has 4.39 speed and only has 316 career carries and produced 1,917 yards and 24 touchdowns.

He will be a nice fit behind and eventually replacing James Conner.
