Annoyed Alexander Zverev threatens to tank match away during argument with umpire

on

Alexander Zverev got very annoyed with chair umpire Richard Haigh during his Munich quarterfinal match against Cristian Garin and at one point even threatened to just tank the match away because he didn’t think that playing while it was raining made any sense.

Today, home favorite and No. 1 Zverev exited Munich after suffering a shock 4-6 4-6 loss to 106th-ranked Garin.

After losing the opening set, Zverev also found himself down by a break in the second after dropping his serve in the fifth game of the set. That’s when Zverev made it perfectly clear that he wasn’t happy with the conditions and that he wanted the match to be suspended due to rain.

But Zverev’s request wasn’t granted as chair umpire Haigh felt it wasn’t raining enough for him to suspend the match.

“At what point are we gonna do something? At what point? Just tell me. Are we not gonna do anything the entire match? Then I’m done. I’m just gonna tank the next two games and I’m done. This is ridiculous. It’s been literally raining,” Zverev was heard ranting at Haigh.

Zverev ended up losing to Garin after the incident

In the first set, Zverev got broken in the third game of the match – had a break point to get the break back instantly – but didn’t manage to convert as Garin opened a 3-1 lead. In the 10th game – when Garin was serving for the first set – Zverev missed out on another break point before the Chilean realized his first set point to seal the opener.

After the incident in the second set while Zverev was down by a set and a break, the German served out the ninth game to reduce the deficit to 4-5. But the match ended in the following game after Garin converted his second match point.

For Zverev, it was certainly a disappointing end to his Munich run since he was targeting to win it all at the tournament for the tournament third time this week.
