The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Tuesday. Star spinner Rashid Khan will lead the team, replacing Hashmatullah Shahidi who captained Afghanistan in the previous edition. Shahidi hasn’t played a T20I since 2022.

The T20 World Cup kicks off on June 1st in the USA and the Caribbean Islands. Afghanistan finds themselves in Group C alongside New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Uganda and West Indies. Their campaign begins against Uganda on June 4th at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.

Young guns make a cut in Afghanistan’s 15-man squad

The squad features exciting young talents like left-arm spinner Nangyal Kharoti, who impressed in his international debut against Ireland this March. The 20-year-old grabbed five wickets in three matches with a miserly economy rate of 5.90.

Another youngster to watch is wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Ishaq, a member of Afghanistan’s squads in the 2020 and 2022 ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cups.

Rashid will lead a potent spin attack that includes Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad, the new addition Kharoti, and the experienced Mohammad Nabi. The pace attack features Naveen-ul-Haq, Fareed Ahmad and Fazalhaq Farooq.
