Los Dogos unbeaten run in Super Rugby Americas 2024 is no more. Los Dogos outscored Yacare by three tries to one but lose the match 22-19. Joaquín Lamas’ goal-kicking was the vital factor. He landed five penalties while Julián Hernández missed one conversion and a late penalty.
The teams traded penalty tries early. Los Dogos benefitted first as an advancing scrum was collapsed. Yacare were level at 7-7 with Dogos captain Franco Molina yellow carded.
Joaquín Lamas gave Yacare the lead with a penalty four minutes from half-time. The 10-7 advantage became 13-7 shortly after the restart. He landed three more but before then Tomás Bartolini barged over for an impressive hooker’s score.
Lamas’ boot have Yacare leading 16-12. Then came the best try of the match. Vision and determination from Julián Hernández saw the fly half from Mendoza slicing through the defense to score under s. He converted but Lamas restored the lead and added one more.
Los Dogos had an opportunity to snatch a draw. However, with two minutes remaining Molina opted to go for a five meter lineout instead of kicking for goal. A knock-on followed three phases later and that was the final opportunity gone.
Yacare’s win sees the Paraguayans retaining third spot in Super Rugby Americas 2024. The win cam hours after Selknam easily took care of business against Os Cobras. This all means that Peñarol is now under heavy pressure; the Uruguayans need to win in Denver on Sunday before returning to South America for the final stretch of matches.
