Does it depend on who the player is?

Draft analysts and enthusiasts rejoice! It’s officially draft week, with Detroit being the backdrop for the 2024 NFL Draft. The 49ers are back in the first round for what seems like an eternity, and it couldn’t come at a better time for the NFC champion 49ers. Brandon Aiyuk is looking for an extension. The team needs offensive line reinforcements. The same goes for cornerback. And dare I say, defensive line.

Pick 31 is exciting because the 49ers are in a position to trade up or down, stand pat for a player, or play chicken with teams at the final moment to gain more draft capital. In my opinion, ten draft picks are more than enough for the 49ers, especially considering it is unlikely all ten will make the 53-man roster. A trade-up (doesn’t have to be in the first round) is optimal with the bevy of compensatory picks the 49ers possess.

If the 49ers stay at pick 31, which position group would you be most disappointed in if the 49ers invested in it? Yes, a future left and right tackle are at the forefront of the team’s needs, especially given how deep the tackle class is in this draft. Next season, the 49ers could potentially have two or three cornerbacks under contract.

Let’s not forget the staple of the 49ers roster building, which is in the trenches and defensive line, which lost Arik Armstead and has been looking for Nick Bosa’s stable running mate since 2019.

Oh, and that whole Aiyuk-receiver situation is lingering. Could the 49ers address the receiver at pick 31?

Fans groan at the idea of using another first-round pick on a defensive lineman. I’m willing to bet that ends up being the winner of the poll, but the 49ers are in a great spot to take the best player available, and that might be a defensive lineman.

Happy draft week, everyone! Prepare for the 49ers to not select whoever you desire!
