The Jets open the 2024 season on the road against a very tough opponent
It was announced this week that the New York Jets would play the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season. This makes for a great matchup on paper given the general consensus that the Jets should be massively improved in 2024 and that the 49ers will continue to be among the league’s best.
What are the odds the New York Jets win that matchup? To try to estimate that, I am going to rely on the DraftKings betting line while acknowledging that this line will likely move to some degree by the time the game is actually played.
As of the writing of this article at 11PM on Tuesday night, the New York Jets are +5.5 in their Week 1 matchup, with a money line of +200; this latter part means that betting $100 would net any Jets bettors $200. If we convert this to an implied probability then we get a value of ~33%, or a 1⁄3 likelihood.
While 33% is still less than any Jets fans would like, it still gives the team fairly good odds against the league’s best, which is a compliment in a way.
