Titans 2024 UDFA Primer: Cole Spencer is Tennessee’s high-priced addition

The Titans signed undrafted offensive linemen Cole Spencer to a contract that contains significant guarantees

The Tennessee Titans have allegedly signed upwards of 10-plus undrafted free agents following the conclusion of the 2024 NFL Draft. I’ve spent the past few days familiarizing myself with all of them. I’ve also confirmed various reported signings through independent sources.

One of those signings is Texas Tech interior offensive linemen Cole Spencer, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson. The Titans gave Spencer $75,000 in total guarantees, including $65,000 in salary guarantees. My sourcing indicates this makes Spencer the Titans’ best-paid undrafted free agent. That immediately indicates that the team possessed serious interest in his services.

Spencer participated in Tennessee’s local workout day earlier this month. I had previously reported that he spent extensive time meeting with offensive line coach Bill Callahan following the conclusion of the local day. That always made Spencer a likely target for the Titans in undrafted free agency.

Spencer qualified to participate in Tennessee’s local day because he previously played at Western Kentucky, a local-eligible program, before transferring to Texas Tech.

Spencer previously played left tackle at Western Kentucky in 2021, but he lacked the arm length (32 inches) required to continue playing that position at the next level. A preseason injury caused Spencer to miss the entire 2022 campaign. He transferred to Texas Tech ahead of 2023, where he appeared in six games primarily as a left guard before suffering another season-ending injury. There’s some injury-related concern here.

In addition to impressing Callahan and Co. at the local day, Spencer enjoyed a phenomenal on-field workout at The Big 12 Pro Day. Spencer ran a lightning-quick 4.89 40-yard dash, which would have been the fastest-recorded time of any offensive linemen at the NFL Combine. He also posted 32 reps on the bench press, and leaped a 30.5 inch vertical, and 9-foot-4 broad, leading to a Relative Athletic Score of 9.43/10.

The Titans didn’t draft an interior offensive linemen. To my knowledge, he’s one of two, maybe three, swing interior guys they’ve signed in unrestricted free agency. Competition for spots inside include the other undrafted free agents, and players like Andrew Rupcich, Saahdiq Charles, and Lachavious Simmons. Pairing the lack of high-end competition with the money guaranteed to Spencer gives him a terrific chance to compete for a 53-man roster spot.
