Chris Grier added tons of “value” despite having limited picks.

The 2024 NFL Draft has wrapped up, and the Dolphins had a low-key fantastic draft. You wouldn’t know that if you were on X reading fan reactions, but highly regarded football analytics expert Warren Sharp agrees with the sentiment.

If you don’t know, Warren Sharp is a trailblazer in the NFL world of advanced metrics and analytics, and he charted the “value” of a team’s draft based on players either going higher than expected or lower than expected.

His analysis of every NFL team in their column “Most & Least Valuable 2024 NFL Draft Classes” is a great read, and I recommend it.

The Dolphins were graded as the number two team in value-added despite having limited picks to start the draft. You can find all of the Dolphins picks here.

The “value” is based on the expectation of when a player should be drafted, compared to the pick used to draft the player is called “DCOE”.

“The resulting metric is called DCOE, standing for Draft Capital Over Expectation, and measures expected capital used on a prospect vs. the actual capital used.” – Warren Sharp “Most & Least Valuable 2024 NFL Draft Classes”

In layman’s terms, if a team drafts a player later than expected, that’s a positive value added. If a team reaches on a player, that’s a negative value added.

The value of each player is determined by a blend of consensus mocks done by Ben Robinson and big boards done by Arif Hasan.

The Dolphins almost reached the top of the value mountain, only bested by the Detroit Lions (-1.53), and ended up with a DCOE of (-1.47).

Here’s what Sharp had to say about the Miami Dolphins 2024 draft:

Chris Grier had a draft masterclass on day three of the draft. Every time the Dolphins made a selection, actual draft experts were ranting and raving about how great the picks were, contrasted to the reaction of the Patrick Paul pick in the second round.

I’m not a draft expert, but I was shocked at people saying that Paul ranked in the triple digits and was a guy who wouldn’t play a snap this year.

The offensive line injury history quickly dispels that, and seeing that Paul ranked as the forty-second best player by Sharp, drafted at fifty-five should have Dolphins fans excited about Paul’s future with the team.

Dolphins fans had a lot of excitement and hope going into the draft, and it’s safe to say that Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel did not disappoint with the value and talent added to the team. The future in Miami looks bright.
