Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 5/5/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

2024 NFL best UDFA fits: One undrafted prospect to watch on each roster – The Athletic
Philadelphia Eagles: Gabe Hall, DL, Baylor. Honorable mention in the Eagles’ class goes Howard OT Anim Dankwah — all 6-7, 353 pounds of him. Offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland will enjoy that challenge. However, the nod here goes to Hall, a versatile 6-6, 291-pounder with 34 1/2-inch arms and an 84-inch wingspan. He was mostly an interior player in college, but his frame allowed him to move around a lot. Brugler had a fourth-round grade on Hall, who could be a rangy five-tech capable of playing either interior spot.

Eagles roster news: Draft pick signs rookie contract, tryout players, and more updates – BGN
Wilson became the first of the Eagles’ nine picks from the 2024 NFL Draft to officially sign his rookie contract. Unlike how it sometimes used to be, there isn’t much drama when it comes to players signing their rookie contracts these days. (Aside from very few exceptions, at least.) The Eagles haven’t had issues anytime recently with rookies being unable to participate in training camp because they decided to hold out. There was a little (and I can’t stress “little” enough) concern when Cam Jurgens took longer than his fellow rookies to sign in 2022. And ditto for Kelee Ringo in 2023. But they ultimately signed well in time to participate in training camp. So, I would expect the Eagles to get their remaining picks under contract before late July. [UPDATE: Trevor Keegan also signed. Two down, seven to go.]

In Roob’s Observations: Can Cooper DeJean be a full-time outside corner? – NBCSP
1. What exactly is Cooper DeJean? Is he a safety? Is he a slot? Is he an outside corner? He sure seems versatile enough to play anywhere in the secondary, but I don’t think the Eagles take him at No. 40 if they don’t believe he can play outside corner. You start with his size. He’s a solid 6-1, 205 pounds. Then you look at his athleticism – he ran 4.43 at his pro day with a 124-inch broad jump and 38-5 vertical, which are all excellent numbers. And then you watch him play and you see that he has an innate understanding of what routes receivers are running and where the ball is going. He just sees things and processes things at an elite level. You rarely see him out of position, and once the ball’s in his hands, he becomes a true weapon, which is obvious from his four TD returns in college (three interceptions, one punt). He’s also a tough, physical run defender and a sure tackler. I expect the Eagles to find some sort of role on defense for DeJean from Day 1, and when Darius Slay’s time here is up, whenever that is, I’d expect DeJean to take over across from Quinyon Mitchell (who I still expect to replace James Bradberry in the starting lineup by opening day).

Cowboys fans believe the team were winners in the draft, but trail other fanbases in their conviction – Blogging The Boys
Initially that may look like an overwhelming number. But this same question was asked at the SB Nation sites for all 32 teams. It turns out that Cowboys fans are lower in their confidence than most fanbases. The only fanbase that voted their team as ‘losers’ were the Atlanta Falcons. Oh that Michael Penix pick will be one that is long remembered. But of all the other 31 fanbases that went with ‘winner’ as the answer, only two (Cleveland and Jacksonville) had a lower positive vote tally than Dallas. The likely culprit? The Cowboys not coming away with a rookie running back.

Ex-Giants GM Dave Gettleman calls media draft analysts ‘clowns’ – Big Blue View
Former New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman called media NFL Draft analysts “clowns” in comments made to the @InsideTheLeague newsletter run by Neil Stratton. “I finally broke down and got a subscription to The Athletic because it was a $1 a month, but it’s like anything else. You got this guy giving every team grades, but you gotta be kidding me. Who are you? What have you done? When have you put your nuts on the line? But, sadly, you got owners listening to these clowns. And even GMs listening to these clowns.” I am not going to rehash every bit of Gettleman’s failed tenure as GM of the Giants. We will just leave it at the fact that the Giants went 19-46, a .292 winning percentage, and never won more than six games in a season.

NFC East 2024 draft grades: Commanders edition – PhillyVoice
With the No. 2 pick they landed Daniels, who in my opinion has the most upside of the quarterbacks taken in this draft, while also grabbing other good players likely to contribute immediately in Newton, Sainristil, Sinnott, and McCaffrey. With their other picks, they trended toward athletes with high upside, like Coleman and Hampton. I kinda love what the Commanders did this offseason. They improved their team both in the short-term and long-term, surrounding their rookie quarterback with legitimate veteran talent, while also maintaining the flexibility to spend again in free agency next offseason. To be determined if Daniels pans out. If he does, this draft will be a huge success. If he doesn’t, then, you know, it won’t. But having now seen the entire picture of the Commanders’ offseason, I see a logical plan that I haven’t been used to seeing from this organization.

Drafting against consensus, Part 1 (probably) – Hogs Haven
Unfortunately, there’s also bad news. Going into this exercise, and knowing that the 49ers had been both one of the most successful teams in the league over the study period, as well as one of the “reachiest,” I expected – and quietly hoped – their aggressiveness in the draft had been one of the foundational piece of their team success. The information in the tweet above allowed me to compile the same sort of information I have previously for the 2023 “reaches,” but this time, for the past seven San Francisco drafts, going back to when John Lynch (and Adam Peters) first arrived in town. That information is below, and it’s not good.
